A List of 89 Review Papers from 2020: Children, Exercise, Sport and Fitness

Screen Shot 2020-12-26 at 2.30.57 PM.png

I’ll admit it. I can chase squirrels and go down the proverbial rabbit hole.

Sometimes I wake in the morning and just let my curiosity and motivation take me.  Today, Christmas Eve Day 2020, I found myself interested in pursuing a thought from the previous day on providing folks with a list of key papers published in 2020. You know, we always see these ‘Best of 2020’ lists. Well, I was actually thinking more along the lines of what was published in 2020 in the area of children and exercise or the field of pediatric exercise science and sports medicine.

I did a quick PUBMED search using the keywords ‘children and exercise’. From a previous search I had ticked the ‘review paper’ filter.  329 papers matched the search.  I started scrolling through the list and copying-and-pasting those I thought relevant to the work that we do.  This meant cutting out some highly clinical papers (e.g., Effects of physical exercise for children and adolescents undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation).  I also changed ‘exercise’ to ‘sport’ which returned 193 results, which of course had some overlap but a few other pertinent papers surfaced. And then, what the hell why not… ‘fitness’…which yielded  75 results and a few additional adds.  I could have continued by using ‘adolescent’ ‘youth sports’ etc. but I drew the line with the list below sorted by category.

DISCLAIMER: I include the link to PUBMED which will provide at the least the abstract and may lead you to either a free or paid link to the full publication.

…and remember this is just published reviews in 2020, there are a lot of good ideas, information, science, publications, chats, videos, blogs, etc. elsewhere and also previously - that is, don’t forget literature published in 2015 or 1978 for that matter. I also want to make that point that it is important to connect, collaborate, share and read ,think and be inquisitive to continue to understand, design, develop and implement best practices towards physical activity, exercise, sports, health, fitness and athletic development in youth, teens and beyond.
